विष्णु पुराण - पहला अध्याय
श्री सूत जी बोले - मैत्रेय जी ने नित्य कर्मो से निवृत हुये मुनिवर पराशर जी को प्रणाम कर एवं उनके चरण छूकर पूछा - "हे गुरुदेव! मैने आप ही से सम्पूर्ण वेद, वेदांग और सकल धर्म शास्त्रों का क्रमशः अध्यायन् किया है| हे मुनि श्रेष्ठ! आपकी कृपा से मेरे विपक्षी भी मेरे लिये यह नहीं कह सकेंगे कि 'मैने सम्पूर्ण शास्त्रों के अभ्यास मे परिश्रम नहीं किया| हे धर्मग्य! हे महाभाग! अब मैं आपके मुखारविन्द से यह सुनना चाहता हूँ कि यह जगत किस प्रकार उत्पन्न हुआ और आयेज भी (दूसरे कल्प के आरंभ में) कैसे होगा? तथा हे ब्राहमण! इस संसार का उपादान-कारण क्या है? यह सम्पूर्ण चराचर किससे उत्पन्न हुआ है? यह पहले किसमे लीन था और आयेज किसमे लीन हो जायेगा? इसके अतिरिक्त (आकाश आदि) भूतो कॅया परिणाम, समुद्र, पर्वत तथा देवता आदि की उत्पत्ति, पृथ्वी का अधिष्ठान और सूर्य आदि कॅया परिमाण तथा उनका आधार, देवता आदि के वंश, मनु, मन्वन्तर (बार-बार आने वाले) चारो युगों मे विभक्त कल्प और कल्पो के विभाग, प्रलय कॅया स्वरूप, युगों के पृथक-पृथक सम्पूर्ण धर्म, देवर्षि और राजर्षियों के चरित्र, श्री व्यासजी द्वारा रचित वैदिक शाखाओं की यथावत रचना तथा ब्राह्मणादि वर्ण और ब्रह्मचर्यादि आश्रमों के धर्म - ये सब, हे महामुनी शक्तिनंदन! मैं आपसे सुनना चाहता हूँ| हे ब्राहमण! आप मेरे प्रति अपना चित्त प्रसादोन्मुख कीजिये जिससे हे महामुने! मैं आपकी कृपा से यह सब जान सकूं|
श्री पराशरजी बोले - "हे धर्मज्ञ मैत्रेय! मेरे पिता श्री वासिष्ठ जी ने जिसका वर्णन किया था, उस पूर्व प्रसंग का तुमने मुझे अच्छा स्मरण् कराया| मैत्रेय! जब मैने सुना कि पिता जी को विश्वामित्र की प्रेरणा से राक्षस ने खा लिया है, तो मुझे बड़ा भरी क्रोध हुआ| तब राक्षसों का ध्वंस करने के लिये मैने यज्ञ करना आरंभ कर दिया| उस यज्ञ मे सैंकड़ों राक्षस जलकर भस्म हो गये| इस प्रकार उन राक्षसों को सर्वथा नष्ट होते देख मेरे महाभाग वसिष्ठ जी मुझसे बोले - हे वत्स! अत्यंत क्रोध करना ठीक नहीं, अब इसे शांत करो| राक्षसों का कुछ भी अपराध नहीं है, तुम्हारे पिता के लिये तो एसा ही होना था| क्रोध तो मूर्खों को ही हुआ करता है, विचारवानों को भला कैसे हो सकता है? भैया! भला कौन किसी को मारता है? पुरुष स्वयं ही अपने किये का फल भोगता है| हे प्रियवर! यह क्रोध तो मनुष्य के अत्यंत कष्ट से संचित यश और तप का भी प्रबल नाशक है| हे तात! यह लोक और परलोक दोनो को बिगाड़ने वाला है, इस क्रोध का महर्षिगण सर्वदा त्याग करते हैं, इसलिये तू इसके वशीभूत मत हो| अब इन बेचारे निरपराध राक्षसों को दग्ध करने से कोई लाभ नहीं; अपने इस यज्ञ को स्माप्त करो| साधुओं का धन तो सदा क्षमा ही है|
महात्मा दादाजी के इस प्रकार समझने पर उनकी बातों के गौरव का विचार करके मैने वह यज्ञ समाप्त कर दिया| इससे मुनिश्रेष्ठ भगवान वसिष्ठ जी बहुत प्रसन्न हुये| उसी समय ब्रह्माजी के पुत्र पुलस्त्यजी वहां आये| पितामह ने उन्हे अर्घ्य दिया, तब वे महर्षी पुलह के ज्येष्ठ भ्राता महाभाग पुलस्त्य जी आसान ग्रहण करके मुझसे बोले -
पुलस्त्य जी बोले - तुमने, चित्त मे बड़ा वैर भाव रहने पर भी अपने बड़े-बूढ़े वसिष्ठ जी के कहने से क्षमा स्वीकार की है, इसलिये तुम सम्पूर्ण शास्त्रों के ज्ञाता होंगे| हे महाभाग! अत्यंत क्रोधित होने पर भी तुमने मेरी सन्तान का सर्वथा मूलोच्छेद नहीं किया; अतः मैं तुम्हे एक ओर उत्तम वर देता हूँ| हे वत्स! तुम पुराण सहिंता के वक्ता होंगे और देवताओं के यथार्थ स्वरूप को जानोगे| तथा मेरे प्रसाद से तुम्हारी निर्मल बुद्धि प्रवृत्ति और निवृत्ति के उत्पन्न करने वाले कर्मों मे निसंदेह हो जायेगी| फिर मेरे पितामह भगवान वसिष्ठ जी बोले "पुलस्त्यजी ने जो कुछ कहा है, वह सभी सत्य होगा|
हे मैत्रेय! इस प्रकार पूर्व काल मे बुद्धिमान वसिष्ठ जी और पुलस्त्य जी ने जो कहा था, वह सब तुम्हारे प्रश्न से मुझे स्मरण् हो आया है| अतः हे मैत्रेय! तुम्हारे पूछने से मैं उस सम्पूर्ण पुराण संहिता को तुम्हे सुनता हूँ; तुम उसे भली प्रकार ध्यान देकर सुनो| यह जगत विष्णु से उत्पन्न हुआ है, उन्ही मे स्थित है, वे ही इसकी स्थिति और लय के करता है तथा यह जगत भी वे ही है|

Shree Sut Ji said - Maitreya ji, after paying obeisance to Munivar Parashar ji, who has been continuously removed from his works, and touching his feet asked, "O Gurudev! I have studied the entire Vedas, Vedang and Sakal Dharma Shastras respectively by you. O Muni Shrestha With your kindness, even my opponents will not be able to say to me that 'I have not worked in the practice of all the scriptures.O saints! Hey Mahagavan! Now I want to hear from your mouthpiece how this world was born and how will it come (in the beginning of the second cycle)? And hey brahmins! What is the causal factor of this world? From whom is this entire pasture originated? What was it absorbed in earlier and what will be absorbed in it?Apart from this, the result of ghosts (sky etc.), the origin of sea, mountain and deity etc., the establishment of earth and the magnitude of sun and their basis, the descent of deity etc., Manu, Manvantar (recurring) divided into four ages. Departments of Kalpa and Kalpo, Pralaya Kya Swarpa, different entire religions of the ages, the character of Devarshi and Rajarshi, the exact composition of the Vedic branches composed by Shri Vyasji and the religion of Brahmanadi varna and Brahmacharyadi ashrams -All this, O Mahamuni Shakti Nandan! I want to hear from you. Hey Brahmin! You should offer your mind to me, Prasad, so O MahaMune! I can know all this with your grace.
Shri Parasharji said - "O Dharmist Maitreya! You have reminded me well of the earlier incident, which my father Shri Vasisthaji had described.Maitreya! When I heard that the demon had eaten the father due to Vishwamitra's inspiration, I was very angry. Then I started the yagna to destroy the demons. Hundreds of demons were burnt to death in that sacrificial fire. Thus, after seeing those demons completely destroyed, my great boss Vasistha said to me - O Watts! It is not good to be extremely angry, now calm it down. There is no crime of demons, it was the same for your father.Anger only happens to fools, how can thinkers be good? Brother! Who kills anyone? The man himself suffers the fruits of his actions. Hey dear This anger is also a strong destroyer of fame and tenacity, accumulated from the very suffering of man. Hey Tat This is going to spoil both the world and the hereafter, the great deities of this anger always renounce, so do not be influenced by it. Now there is no benefit from burning these poor innocent demons; Recollect this yajna of yours. The money of the sages is always forgiveness.After thinking of Mahatma Dadaji in this way, considering the pride of his words, I finished that yagya. Munishrestha Lord Vashistha was very happy with this. At the same time, Pulastya, son of Brahmaji, came there. Pitamah gave him the arghya, then he received the elder brother of Maharishi Pulah, Mahabhaga Pulastya ji, and said to me -
Pulastya ji said - you have accepted forgiveness from your eldest elder, even if you have a great attitude in your mind.That is why you will know all the scriptures. Hey Mahagavan! Despite being extremely angry, you did not completely eradicate my child; So, I give you one more nice bridesmaid. O son! You will be the speaker of Purana Sahita and will know the true nature of the deities. And with my offerings, your pure intellect will be undoubtedly in the instincts and deeds that generate retirement. Then my grandfather Bhagwan Vasistha said, "Whatever Pulastyaji has said, it will all be true."
Hey Maitreya! In this way, I have been reminded by your question all that the wise Vasistha ji and Pulastya ji had said in the past. Therefore, O Maitreya! I ask you to listen to that entire Purana Samhita; You pay attention to him well. This world originated from Vishnu, it is located in them, it is the position and rhythm of it, and this world is also they.
